Stateboard

President - Kwabena Boateng

Dreamweaver CS3Hello Nevada!
First of all, I would like to thank all who were involved in electing me as the 2009/2010 NASC State President.  Throughout the year, I hope you notice the new forms of communication being implemented by the newly elected state officers. I encourage each school to apply for the National Council of Excellence Award and for each student to apply to be Certified Student Leaders, to prove to the entire nation that Nevada has the best student councils around!  Please be aware of this year’s charitable contribution goal of $125,000.   Please refer to NevadaStuco.org  and the NASC newsletter periodically, to receive NASC updates.  Have a great year Nevada!

AAAA1 Vice - Morgan O'Brien

A Laptop ComputerHello Nevada. My Name is Morgan O’Brien and I am your 09-10 NASC AAAA1 Vice President.  I am so thrilled to be in this position and a part of the State Board.  I Love it! I am also Student Body Commissioner of Community Relations at Galena High School in Reno.  As a part of this Position I am the Chair of the Community Service Committee.  This gives me lots of opportunities to help out and be involved with Reno and the Galena Area and I love it.  I am a passionate and enthusiastic person, I love being outdoors and eating good food, and I love Dancing. I look forward to getting to know each of the Nevada Schools throughout the year!

AAAA2 Vice - Catherine Cabo

Dreamweaver CS3Hey Nevada! Once again my name is Catherine Cabo and I am your 4A2 Vice President for the 2009/2010 school year. Some of you may not know what this means, so I am here to explain it for you. Being the 4A2 Vice President mainly means that I am in charge of keeping all schools in my region fully connected and up to date regarding the goal packets that you will send in to me. My goals for my term will be to ensure each school gets a chance at the Blue or Silver Star Award. This means all of the schools should actively participate in sending in goal packets, newsletters, sister school contacts, charitable contributions, and anything else regarding the NASC. It will be my job that every school is notified of these things. Some interesting facts about me are that I will also be the Student Body President of Shadow Ridge HS, varsity tennis member, and I am completely obsessed with Harry Potter! I cannot wait to get to know each one of your schools individually throughout this year!

AAA Vice - Sarah Melia

A Laptop ComputerHey Everyone! Sarah Melia here! So... As 3A Vice, my job pretty much consists of collecting and going over goal packets for the Silver and Blue Star Awards. It's a lot of paperwork and checking email for sure! I definitely do not mind it though! It's an honor to serve you all! This year, my goals are to keep in constant communication with all of the 3A schools in Nevada. I plan to send frequent reminders about due dates for goal packets to increase the number of recipients for the Silver Star Award. I also plan on helping the inactive schools in Nevada to become active; we gotta show these schools how much fun it is to be involved in the NASC!

So, I'm supposed to tell you a few interesting things about myself. Well... I love music! I love to sing, play, and write which is what i do with most of my free time. I love going to the lake and playing beach volleyball. My friends and family mean the world to me. I love meeting new people and i love to just go out and have a good time. :)

AA Vice - Jonica Fortune

Dreamweaver CS3Hey Everyone

I am Jonica Fortune from Battle Mountain High School. I am excited to be Nevada State AA Vice President! My goal for the year is to improve the percent of AA Schools participation!

I enjoy playing basketball, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends. I love being around kids and thinking about becoming a teacher. I hope you all have a wonderful year and accomplish all your goals!

A Vice - Melora Weeks

A Laptop ComputerHey Nevada! My name is Melora Weeks and I am the 1A vice president. I am very active in school and do many activities including: student council, volleyball, basketball, track, academic olympics, drama, honors, and FFA. I am very outgoing and love to meet new people. I always try to make the best of life and I work hard in all situations.
I keep track of monthly goal packets and encourage the attainment of the silver and blue star awards. I represent all of the 1A schools and voice any concerns or questions coming from the 1A schools to the state board.
My goals are to increase the number of active 1A schools by communication. Another goal of mine is to increase the number of schools that are eligible to receive the silver and blue star awards.
1A schools are so great because there are few students and everyone knows each other. Fundraising can be difficult because there are not very many people to help but the kids that come to help work hard and work together until the work is done. With the administrations approval, 1A schools can do fun activities such as: jello wrestling, donkey basketball, and school picnics. 1A schools are great and I am really glad that I am able to represent them!

Conference Chair - Jenna Pallach

My name is Jenna Pallach and I am student body secretary at Spring Creek High School. I like to hang out with friends and family, go on skiing adventures, and travel during the summer. I am a state conference chair and I am really excited to host state this year. My goals are to come up with a fun friday activity and find some awesome keynote speakers at nationals. I have these goals to make the state conference the best it can be. I can't wait to see everyone at state!!

Conference Chair - Jema Gallio

Hello! My name is Jema Marie Gallio and this year on the NASC state board I am a State Conference Chair. I attend school at Spring Creek High School and this is where our state conference will be hosted. I am lucky enough to be a State Chair along with Jenna and Patrick. Our advisor Mr. Hendrickson is also a part of our team. We all want to have a great state conference. Our theme this year is going to be, "It's a bird, It's a plane, No it's a leader!" So it is a superhero theme. We are gathering ideas and information as much as we can. My goals are to obviously host a great State Conference, but I also want our council that is working on this to become a team and a family. To have a great conference our first goal should be to stay organized!  I would like every student council member that comes to our state conference to have fun and leave wanting to come back again. Another goal of mine is to get inactive schools to come to our state conference and I got this idea because our advisor suggested it. I would like our speakers to be new and fresh that no one has experienced before. My last goal would be to have as much involvement throughout the state as possible. I am currently a senior and I am involved in Student Council, FFA, Honor Society, 4H, and whatever else comes along. I love going to school and my favorite subject is student council. I love being outside whether it is in the summer or the winter. During the summer I love to knee board, camp, picnics, water ski, tube, swim, attempt to wake board, go fishing, and any other fun idea that comes to mind. In the winter I love to ski, snowboard, snowmobile, and of course snow angels. I absolutely love animals and people. I am hoping that my future career will involve helping both of those things. I love Italian food and cookie dough! I also enjoy reading and singing in the car. I am secretly obsessed with dalmatians and have been ever since I was little. I own six dogs, three horses, two fish, and sometimes other animals come along. I live in the beautiful town of Lamoille with just my two parents since I am an only child. I have a list of over 100 things that I will accomplish before I die and I will complete it. That's basically me in a nut shell. :) haha

Conference Chair - Patrick Harris

My name is Patrick Harris and I am the Vice President of Spring Creek High School’s Student Council.  Outside of school, I am part of the Elko Police Cadet program, and enjoy writing, reading, hiking, and hunting.  Being a superhero geek, I am also the go-to-guy for all facts and info concerning heroes.  As Technology Chair of the 2010 State Conference, I oversee the convention’s technology from lights and clockwork to videos and music.  My goals for this upcoming conference are to make it both an exciting and interesting experience for the students of Nevada, and to create entertaining videos for General Sessions.  For those attending, each General Session will start with a ten-minute clip of superheroes and music videos (an example can be seen at www.nasc2010.com).   Videos feature Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Wonder Woman, and many others.  We look forward to seeing you in Spring Creek in April.

Mid-Level Liason - Loralee Price

Dreamweaver CS3            Hello Nevada! I am Loralee Price, your Middle Level Liason for the upcoming school year.  I am a native Las Vegan, I have lived here my whole life.  I attend Centennial High School in northwest Las Vegas.  My life basically consists of the following; Student council, shotgun shooting on a competitive level, which is something that I have been doing so for 7 years now, I play golf and bowl for my school teams, I manage the baseball team and I make the high light films for our varsity football team.  I am dedicated to doing the best I can and nothing less.  I live by the motto, “Good enough never is.”  Therefore I will do everything in my power to be the best I can be.  Some of my goals as your middle level liaison are: get more participation in the spirit of Nevada award, help put on the best middle level conferences the state of Nevada has ever seen, and to increase communication between high schools and their surrounding middle schools.  I am so excited to be working on the state board and promise not to disappoint!

Northern Rep. - Meleigh Groff

A Laptop ComputerHey Nevada! My name is Meleigh Groff and I am your new Northern Region Representative. I will be a senior at Elko High School (09-10) and will be serving as Student Body Controller. I am excited to be getting ready to put on the Northern Region Conference, “Leadership: To Infinity and Beyond”, on November 24.
My number one goal with having this position is communication throughout the northern region and then getting that info to the State Board. In keeping with my goal I have set up a wiki for northern Nevada. So be sure to check it out and leave your feedback. This can be a very helpful tool for everyone if they utilize it and since I am not in each school it will help me see what issues I need to take to the Board that we can work on to help make the north better. http://nascnorthernnevada.pbworks.com/
I would love to have a 100% active region, but it is going to take all of us to achieve this goal. But one of the biggest things we can do as a region is become so united that we can cheer on, support, and help Spring Creek High School put on one of the best state conferences Nevada has ever seen! If you have any comments or questions or need anything please feel free to let me know by contacting me at northernrep@nevadastuco.org. Best of luck to all you and keep shooting for the stars (preferably blue and silver ones J)!

Southern Rep. - Taylor Ashton

Dreamweaver CS3Hi, my name is Taylor Ashton, and I am your NASC Southern Region Representative. As many of you already know, I am very excited to be in this State Board Position. I am honored to be able to represent the Southern Nevada Student Councils. I have many goals, including having a Baseball-themed Zone Conference entitled Leadership: It’s Outta the Park, increasing effective brother school contact, improving the South’s communication, and have Southern Nevada Student Councils make an impact in our community. On top of these goals being attainable for the South, constant work is always being done to ensure their progress.
I know that this year will be great for the South, and all of Nevada. I am always open to suggestions, comments, concerns, or questions, so with said, please contact me if you wish at southernrep@nevadastuco.org. I hope to see you soon!

Western Rep. - Constanza Ponce de Leon

A Laptop ComputerNevada! I hope everyone has been having a great summer so far!!
As most of you know, I am the Western Region Representative for this school year. After the first State Board meeting concluded, my goals had become clear as to what it was I had envisioned for the Western Region. So a detailed list of ideas, goals, and projects, was created and eventually sent out to all the schools in the region in a letter format.  As I have said before many times, I believe communication is the most important thing in order to maintain a unified and active region. (Which by the way, the Western Region Facebook Page has been created; so, you may start using it!) Therefore all requirements for the Wild West Award circle around the “better communication” idea. So Western Schools: make sure you read the criteria and start planning so that your school is an award recipient for this coming school year!
You all know my duties, and by now I’m pretty sure you also know what my plans and ideas consist of. But you don’t know much about me, so I guess this is my chance to tell you what your Western Regional Representative does with her life when she’s not working for the NASC. I love tennis, (I’m coaching little kids now!) and have been very dedicated to it since my freshman year, and I guess it paid off because I got titled captain of the Varsity Tennis Team and I’m way pumped! Art is another thing I’m extremely passionate about (I don’t need a canvas; I doodle wherever I can). It’s just cool being able to express yourself without the use of speech. I’m not much of the camping type, but I’m all for hikes and road trips! Tahoe is my haven. So whenever we have the chance, my friends and I go up there and enjoy life. And as weird as this may sound, I love school. Some of my friends tell me I just overstress myself, and I guess that’s true, but to me it’s all worth it— I have no doubt it will come in handy one day. Along the same lines of education I guess, comes another interesting fact about me. I was born in Mexico and lived there twelve years before moving to Reno, so I’ve become extremely interested and passionate about learning from other cultures. And that’s brought along a third passion of mine—traveling. Whenever I get a chance, I buy airplane tickets to go visit family around the world. I truly believe that learning from other cultures helps you understand your own. So hopefully one day I can end up working in an international field.
That’s a pretty summarized idea of who I am and what I’m all about! I plan to contribute all my traits and experiences to the NASC Board and make this year a successful one, not just for our Western Region, but for all of Nevada!

School Board Rep. - Zhan Okuda-Lim

Dreamweaver CS3Hello Nevada!  My name is Zhan Okuda-Lim, your Student Representative to the Nevada State Board of Education for the 2009-2010 School Year!
I am currently a Junior at Valley High School in Las Vegas, and I am a World War Two buff!  I love to study the great battles and important figures of the era, and my bookshelf is stuffed with books on the battles, strategies, and technology!
I also take a great interest in government, and I always watch the news and follow important political stories.  A hobby of mine is studying political theories and various systems of government.  I closely followed the recent presidential election, and furthermore kept a close eye on the recent legislative session in Carson City, watching out for legislation which will affect our education here in Nevada.
I am working on implementing the Education First Action Plan to insure that your voices are heard by our State and Educational Leaders.  I will keep you updated as we move forward, and please do not hesitate to e-mail me your comments, questions, and suggestions.
I shall do my best to serve you this upcoming school year, and together, we will insure that education comes first!

Newsletter Editor - Mason Dettloff

A Laptop ComputerHey Nevada!

This is Mason Dettloff your State Board Newsletter Editor! The year has already started and I hope all of you enjoyed the State Recap Edition Newsletter that was sent out. Some schools sent me personal emails describing their thoughts on the newsletter and I hope the rest of Nevada high schools will do the same. My job is to be a voice for your council and allow you to share your ideas with the entire state. I do not have any goals, only promises that all of the newsletters will be to the greatest advantage and use to your Student Council.
As you can tell with the State Recap Edition newsletter there were already numerous new features that were placed to your benefit; such as the State of the NASC page where your State Board President delivers to you a message every newsletter describing what he is doing to make our State more effective. As well as the Education First Page, where you can be aware of what is effecting us on a governmental level represented by our School Board of Education Representative.
Plan to see lots of newsletters and a brand new way of communicating with other schools in the state. As these newsletters come out please email me at newslettereditor@nevadastuco.org, letting me know if the newsletter and I are doing our job to the best benefit of your school!

Secretary - Shannon Larson

Dreamweaver CS3Hey Nevada!  My name is Shannon Larson and I am the proud 2009-2010 Nevada State Board Secretary.  As Secretary, my responsibilities include taking detailed minutes at every State Board meeting as well as contributing my ideas and thoughts.  It is very important for the minutes to be precise and for this reason I save the first draft within 24 hours on the Wiki so my fellow board members can correct them.  My future goal for my position includes using the convenience of technology at the meetings to type my minutes instead of having to write them and type them at a later time.  Also, I hope to maintain communication with the board members on any thoughts they may have regarding the minutes.  Along with my State Board position, I will soon begin an internship with the Boys and Girls Club.  This incredible internship will provide the opportunity for me to work with children of all ages and I hope it will not only provide a chance for personal growth, but also allow me to understand new ways to improve Nevada through the NASC.  I plan to make the upcoming year as successful as possible and I look forward to communicating with the State Board over summer.
